Kuzma Introduces Bill to Create Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday
May 19, 2025
HARRISBURG – Rep. Andrew Kuzma (R-Allegheny/Washington) recently introduced legislation to establish a sales tax holiday in August on back-to-school essentials.
“While a new school year is exciting, purchasing necessary supplies for students can be very costly for parents,” Kuzma said. “While Pennsylvania does not tax everyday clothing, other items such as hosiery, scarves, handbags, book bags, lunch boxes, pens, notebooks and computers are subject to the sales tax. This can add up quickly. As a father of a young family, I know the daily struggles of inflation and rising costs firsthand. My legislation would create a tax holiday similar to South Carolina’s. I hope we can get this bill passed before the school year begins.”
House Bill 1437 would create an annual back-to-school sales tax holiday beginning the first Friday in August for a week. Items exempt from the sales tax during that time would include clothing accessories, footwear, school supplies, computers and certain household items.
The bill was referred to the House Finance Committee.
The 39th Legislative District includes Elizabeth, Forward and South Park townships and Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills and West Elizabeth boroughs in Allegheny County; and Union and part of Carroll townships, Finleyville and New Eagle boroughs, and the city of Monongahela in Washington County.
